- How do I know I submitted my application properly?

You will receive a confirmation email notifying you that your application was successfully submitted. You can also go to GovernmentJobs, enter your username and password (same username and password used when completing the online application), and click on the “Applications and Status” tab.
- How can I check the status of my application?

- How and when can I update my application?

Changes can be made to each section of the application at any time before it is submitted. Once you submit your application, the information is final and you cannot go back and make changes to the submitted application. If you submit a duplicate application for the same position before the closing date of the position, only the most recent application will be considered.
Please contact Human Resources if your address and / or phone number changes after you submit your application.
- What if I am not ready to fill out the application at this time?

No application is submitted until you click on the “Submit” button. If at any time you do not want to submit your application, save your work, then logout.
- Will I automatically be considered for other positions if I previously applied?

No, you must submit a separate application for each position you are interested in.
- I missed the deadline. Can I still apply?

No. Once the closing date for a position has passed, additional applications will not be accepted. Please continue to visit our website and apply for new jobs as they become available. You may also want to sign up for Job Alerts to automatically be notified when a position you are interested in becomes available.

For the next 12 months after you submit the job alerts form, you will receive an email notification when a position opens with New Hanover County whose category matches the categories you selected.
- How do I print my application?

After you have submitted your application, a link will appear that says “Click here for a printable version of the application you just submitted.”
- Can I apply for more than one job at a time?

Yes, you can apply for any positions that are currently accepting applications.
- Who will see my application when I use the online process?

All information is on a secure web server. Only the Human Resources department and authorized county department users have access to submitted applications.
- What if I do not have a computer or access to the web?

Public computers are available in many public libraries and in the NHC government center which is available Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, located at 230 Government Center Dr. in Wilmington. Applications can also be completed by using a smartphone or tablet.
- How will I know if a position I have applied for has been filled?

You will receive an email notification when a position that you have applied to has been filled. You can check the status of your application at any time by logging back into the application portal and clicking "application status."
- Does NHC also accept applications for vacancies at the Cape Fear Public Utility authority, City of Wilmington, or other government agencies?

No. New Hanover County is a separate organization and only accepts applications for vacancies at New Hanover County government.
- What should I do if I am interested in a position but it is not listed on the vacancy list?

Applications are accepted only for jobs that are currently open and available on the website. Sign up for Job Alerts to receive an email when there is a new position available with New Hanover County in your field.

- Who should I contact to follow up on my application?

Applicants who are selected for the next stage of the recruitment process will be contacted directly by Human Resources or the hiring department. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we do not notify each applicant individually regarding the status of the recruitment for the position. To check the status of your application, go to GovernmentJobs, enter your username and password (same username and password used when completing the online application), and click on the “Applications and Status” tab.
- What happens after I submit my application?

After the closing date of the position, applications are reviewed and screened by the Human Resources department. Some positions may require pre-employment testing prior to a referral being made to the department. After screening by Human Resources, the best-qualified candidates are referred to the hiring department to be brought through the first step in the recruitment process. Candidates referred to the hiring department will be notified via email by Human Resources.
- How long does it take for the hiring manager to schedule interviews after a position closes?

If you are selected for referral to the hiring department, you will be contacted either by phone or email, within a target of two weeks after the closing date of the position. If you have not been contacted by the department within two weeks after you have been notified that your application was referred, please contact the Human Resources department at 910-798-7178.
- Can I submit a resume only?

No, New Hanover County requires a completed application. The employment application has been designed to provide the information needed to make employment-related decisions. Applicants are encouraged to thoroughly complete each field of the application and ensure accuracy before submitting it. An applicant may provide a resume and/or cover letter as an attachment to the completed application.
- Does NHC require candidates for employment to submit to a drug screen or physical examination?

As a condition of employment, all persons selected for employment are required to pass a drug screening. Certain positions require a physical examination such as those in the Sheriff’s Office and Fire Services.
- How long will my application remain "active"?

Applications remain active or on file until a hiring decision has been made. New Hanover County does not re-activate applications for future vacancies. You will receive email notification once the position you applied for has been filled.
